CFC Addresses Benefits and Risks of Driverless Cars

Consumer Federation of California Executive Director Richard Holober participated in a public hearing on self-driving cars and insurance issues, convened by state Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones at the Tech Museum of Innovation in San Jose. Noting that the emerging technology could reduce accidents if it’s widely adopted, Holober stressed the need to ensure that any savings get passed along to consumers under Proposition 103. He also cited concerns about who would have access to data from the vehicles, and of possible meddling by hackers. Holober’s main comments begin at 1:18:25, but this video includes the entire two-hour hearing. An eight-page Department of Insurance background paper that was prepared for the hearing is available here [pdf].
