Consumer Federation Endorses Dave Jones for Insurance Commissioner

The Consumer Federation of California has endorsed Dave Jones for election to the office of Insurance Commissioner in the November 2010 election.

‘Dave Jones is a champion for consumers. Dave Jones will be a powerful watchdog protecting consumers against insurance industry abuse’, stated Richard Holober, Executive Director of the Consumer Federation of California.

During his tenure in the State Assembly, Dave earned a lifetime 99% pro-consumer voting record on CFC legislative scorecards.  His record of accomplishment includes writing laws to end gender discrimination in health insurance pricing (AB 119), guaranteeing consumers the right to get their own estimate for auto body repairs even if the insurance company has provided its estimate (AB 1179), and extending the state’s low cost auto insurance program that helps reduce the number of uninsured drivers on the road (AB 1597). Dave has led the fights to control skyrocketing health insurance costs through rate regulation, and to eliminate clauses in disability insurance contrasts which give insurers too much discretion in denying coverage without proper cause.

Dave Jones is a lawyer with a consumer protection background, having served as Special Assistant and Counsel to Attorney General Janet Reno in the Clinton Administration.

Dave Jones’ opponent in the race, Assembly member Mike Villines has a lifetime 15% pro-consumer score card grade. Assemblyman Villines voted for big business interests and against consumer protection on 85% of votes he cast in the Assembly.

The non-profit Consumer Federation of California has been a leading voice for consumer rights at the state capitol since its founding in 1960.
