Victory! AT&T and Verizon’s attack on low-income consumers stopped
Today the California Senate Appropriations Committee stopped Assembly Bill 1407 in its tracks.
AB 1407 (Bradford) would have turned the low-income LifeLine telephone program into a voucher system for costly telephone plans, and would have eliminated most Public Utilities Commission oversight of the program.
But today, the Senate Appropriations Committee “held” the bill, effectively killing it for 2013.
Consumer Federation of California Executive Director Richard Holober stated, “An outpouring of opposition from consumers, seniors, organized labor, and the faith community overcame the corporate lobbying clout of AT&T and Verizon. Low-income Californians will continue to have basic phone service, including 911 service, at an affordable price.”
