Consumer Federation of California 2024 General Election Endorsement in Key California Races

For Immediate Release

The Consumer Federation of California (CFC) is pleased to announce our endorsement of 10 candidates in California races on the November 5, 2024 election. These 10 candidates, all of whom are running in districts where the top two vote getters in the primary were Democrats, represent CFC’s slate of strong pro-consumer rights candidates. They have shown based on their records and interviews with CFC’s endorsement committee that they are up to the challenge. Voters have real choices in these districts and the CFC-endorsed candidates will work hard to protect consumers and enhance consumer protections. CFC urges our supporters to help out one or more of these candidates in whatever way you can. To that end links to their campaign websites are included in this message.

US CONGRESSIONAL RACE

Sam Liccardo (D)

Congressional District 16 (Part of  Silicon Valley & the nearby Coast in San Mateo & Santa Clara County)

Sam Liccardo will be much stronger on consumer protection issues than his opponent, who wouldn’t even meet with CFC. Accordingly CFC is pleased to endorse his candidacy for US Congress to replace retiring Anna Eshoo. Sam understands consumer issues and will have an open mind when it comes to important consumer protection public policy choices facing the US Congress.

STATE SENATE RACES

Jovanka Beckles (D)

Senate District 7 (Includes part of Alameda and Contra Costa counties, and a small section of San Francisco City/County)

CFC proudly endorses Jovanka Beckles for the 7th State Senate district. While her opponent refused to meet with CFC, Jovanka has been a staunch progressive on economic and consumer protection issues for many years and fought for those less fortunate throughout her career. She would be a strong advocate for consumer protection in California. Jovanka Beckles is the most pro-consumer choice in SD 7.

Tim Grayson (D)

Senate District 9 (East Bay, predominantly Contra Costa County)

Tim Grayson has developed a strong working relationship with CFC and has become a leader on consumer protection issues. He authored the California law licensing and providing strong consumer protections in the crypto marketplace, which has been rife with fraud and consumer abuse. He has shown himself to be a strong ally to consumer groups such as CFC and is always willing to openly listen to our concerns. Tim Grayson should be elected to the California State Senate to continue this important work and CFC proudly endorses him.

Michelle Chambers

Senate District 35 (Includes part of the city of Los Angeles, as well as Carson, Compton, Inglewood, and Hawthorne)

The choice in Senate District 35 could not be more clear: Michelle Chambers is far and away the best option to protect consumers. Michelle deeply cares about lifting up communities of color and keeping people from getting scammed and ripped off. Residents of the 35th Senate district have only one option if they care about consumer protection over corporate profits, and that option is Michelle Chambers.

STATE ASSEMBLY RACES

Catherine Stefani

Assembly District 19 (Includes much of San Francisco City/County and also some of northern San Mateo County)

CFC is happy to endorse Catherine Stefani for State Assembly District 19. Catherine showed a good grasp of consumer issues and should be a leader on consumer protection if she makes it to the State Assembly. CFC is pleased to support her candidacy.

Patrick Ahrens

Assembly District 26 (Includes the cities of Cupertino, Santa Clara, and Sunnyvale in Santa Clara County)

We are pleased to endorse Patrick Ahrens for Assembly District 26. CFC is pleased to endorse Patrick Ahrens in AD 26 and looks forward to his being a leader on consumer issues in the State Assembly.

Robert Garcia

Assembly District 50 (Includes a majority of San Bernardino County)

Robert Garcia is the clear choice in the 50th Assembly District and we are pleased to endorse his candidacy. Robert brings a deep understanding of education issues and was very supportive of the CFC perspective on consumer protection. Robert Garcia is the obvious choice for State Assembly.

Jessica Caloza

Assembly District 52 (Includes southern portion of Glendale and parts of Los Angeles City and unincorporated East Los Angeles)

CFC strongly endorses Jessica Caloza in the 52nd Assembly District. Jessica is extremely familiar with consumer protection issues given her career path, and this understanding shone through in our conversation with her. She is an impressive candidate and could be a true state leader on consumer issues if elected to the State Assembly. Jessica Caloza is CFC’s strong choice to protect consumers in the State Assembly District 52.

Sade Elhawary

Assembly District 57 (Encompasses neighborhoods of Downtown, South and Southeast Los Angeles City)

Sade Elhawary is the best of the new generation of California leaders who care deeply about their community and work tirelessly to improve it. Sade had an enthusiastic understanding of the consumer protection challenges facing her community and a distinctive approach to improving and enhancing consumer protections. She would be a clear leader on consumer issues. Sade Elhawary is far and away the best candidate to help consumers in the State Legislature and CFC is proud to endorse her.

LaShae Sharp-Collins

Assembly District 79 (Includes parts of Southeastern San Diego, Lemon Grove, Spring Valley, La Mesa and El Cajon.)

CFC endorses LaShae Sharp-Collins for State Assembly district 79. While CFC had a good conversation with both candidates in the race, LaShae stood out as the candidate with the most comprehensive grasp of consumer protection issues in this historically underserved part of the San Diego region. She would be well-positioned to be a leader on consumer issues in the State Legislature. CFC is pleased to endorse LaShae Sharp-Collins for the State Assembly.
